What Is the Difference Between a Sound Engineer and an Audio Engineer?

Maybe you are interested in beginning a career in the music or even the film industry, but you aren’t sure exactly what you can do in these sectors. The excitement that goes along with both can be attractive to millions of people. But you don’t always have to be in front of the camera or on the microphone to make your impact in these industries. Being behind the scenes can be just as enjoyable as being in the spotlight.

Options

There are several options you can pursue in these businesses. You can be hired on as a roadie or a grip and do the menial jobs. However, your impact will not be felt by moving speakers or bringing people their drinks. You need to consider your strengths and use those in the decision-making. For instance, if you have a keen ear for music and have a bit of skill with the latest technology, you might consider a career as a sound engineer or an audio engineer.

What’s the Difference Between the Two?

While there are not huge differences between being an audio engineer and a sound engineer, there are discrepancies between the two. The skills and knowledge often overlap one into the other. In fact, the jobs performed by both may be very similar. The biggest disparities between the two is that an audio engineer is in charge of all aspects of audio for theater or a concert. A sound engineer may do this, too, but also include sound for films, video games, and television. So while you see there is not a huge difference, it could help guide you into which profession to head into. The truth is that many people begin with getting their toes wet as an audio engineer and then branch out further as a sound engineer later on.

How to Make the Choice Between the Two

You don’t have to choose one or the other at this moment. Your best bet would be to do some research and find a few schools that could be of assistance in making your decision. Determining which sound engineering schools can help you to find your vocation could literally change your life around completely. After a few classes you should be able to determine if being a sound engineer or audio engineer is in your future.
