Project team member Wyatt Huntting
Interviewed
date: Aug
24 1999
[Q:]
Okie shall we start with the interview?
YIT> sure
thing.
[Q:]
Okay, may I know your real name sir?
YIT> sure
thing. Wyatt Huntting
[Q:]
And what is your area of expertise ?
YIT> I'm
the Senior Shockwave Developer here at Fusion Inc, so I guess
that would mean my expertise is anything Flash :P
[Q:] How did you guys started off in this creating this project
and how are you involved in this flash project?
YIT> Well,
ShockFusion began with a few different groups of us working at
different areas of the site and meeting somewhere in the middle.
I helped a few different people out on their projects, but my
main focus was developing the initial chatroom using ASP and then
porting it over to php3.
[Q:] Would you help explain alittle about Php to our audience
please?
YIT> sure.
php is a scripting language not completely unlike ASP. we used
it to take variables passed from Flash4 and communicate with the
database, calling text fields and user info, etc.
[Q:] Why did choose to use Php?
YIT> We
wanted to get onto a linux platform, and php3 just happens to
be a linux type ASP.
[Q:] Would it be possible to parse scripts from Perl in Unix systems
for Flash?
YIT> Actually,
I'm not sure about that one. I would assume so since people use
Perl scripts for Flash on other OS's
[Q:] Are every members of your shockfusion project working in
the same place?
YIT> Yes,
currently we are all located in Seattle, Wa. USA. Working in the
same office definitely helps us get things communicated and worked
on a lot quicker
[Q:] Is this a joint private project that you guys work around
with just for interest?
YIT> well,
SF was originally created to help push the technology for more
than just 'pretty' front ends. with SF we tried to show that Flash4
no longer completely lacks the backend capabilities of earlier
versions. not to mention the fact that it could also be used for
internet advertising with so many advantages over animated gifs,
but nobody seems to know this outside the flashing community.
and so SF was also created with bringing the Flash advertising
to the public in mind, not to mention that a lot of us at the
company thought a Flash developer's center actually based _in_
flash would be a lot more appropriate(and fun :P)
[Q:] Are you paid for this project, if you don?t mind me asking?
YIT> Fusion
Inc. is a real company, yes, and as such we are all paid, regardless
of which project we are working on
[Q:] Would you think it's ever possible to create something like
multi-user gaming online in Flash?
YIT> Certainly.
One would just need to work out the scripting for multiple users.
depending on the game it might not even be that hard. you would
just need fast enough computers(depending on the graphics complexity)
and a way of communicating user positions. I can't really say
one way or another if it?s the future of online gaming, considering
the state development of Flash-based online gaming is in right
now. It could be or it could not be, though my guess is that while
Flash technology may increase, so will the technology on which
multi-user games are based now.
[Q:] Do you think it would be a better solution for multi-user
gaming than using shockwave?
YIT> At
the present, no. Director has better game-based scripting capabilities.
the main advantage that Flash would have over Director would be
the download, but Lingo is a fairly advanced language, where as
actionscripting is in it's infant stages
[Q:] No problem Sir, so would you like to say a few last words
to our audience?
YIT> umm,
just keep thinking... if you encounter a problem, think of it
as a tollbooth, not a roadblock. you just need to come up with
the fare :P
[Q:] Okie, Thank you Sir for your precocious time in this special
interview with you. :)
YIT> no
problem. Thanks for having me and keep checking back at SF, it's
still Beta and exciting things are happening there every day!
[Q:] Okay. Thanks again to you Mr Wyatt Huntting for your spontaneous
repsonse :)
YIT> No problem,
that's what I'm here for :P Also, if the readers have any questions
they feel haven't been asked or answered, find me in the SF chatroom
or feel free to post SF-related queries in the SF Beta forum
