problem statement

i am trying to find a way in which i can use the value of a variable as a variable name for storing data.

how i got in this mess

i am trying to make a calculator for cross country run scoring. The scoresheet contains variable corresponding to the bib number of each runner (a1, a2 ...). The calculator also has two input text fields called 'bibnumber' and 'finalposition' which the user can use to enter the bib number of a runner and his position as he completes the race.

once the user enters a bib number and his position (e.g. a1 and 23) i want that particular variable (a1 in this case) to store the position (23).

so the calculator has to read the bib number entered by the user and decide which variable to update.

is there any way to do this?

any help will be much appreciated.
