Scenario

I'm building a website that has 2 big problems with the drop down menu. I know what they are and why they happen, but my lack of experience hasn't helped in trying to fix them.

I built the menu using a tutorial. As the mouse goes over a button the drop down menu appears. When taken away from the button, the mouse moves over a "rollout" area which triggers the menu to disappear.

Problems

1. When the mouse moves quickly from the button, it moves too fast to be detected on the rollout area which causes the menu to stay open, therefore can cause multiple menus to remain open even though the mouse is not near them.
2. The flash document had to be 400px high in order to hold the tallest drop down menu. So when I put the flash file into HTML as an object, it causes all of my HTML content to be pushed down leaving 400px of white space before the rest of the body content starts.

I know the tutorial I followed was a "ghetto" way of doing this style of menu, but I couldn't seem to find tutorials explaining the correct way.

If anyone has any ideas or can link a better tute, I would appreciate it a lot.
