resizing document without resizing components

I made flash mc buttons and imported designs from photoshop to use as the various instances. Like an idiot though, i imported the backgrounds along with them. I got the flash mc working great, with the exception being it exported a 550x400px file consisting of mainly white space and a button in the middle, which certainly would make for a pretty awful-looking website. So I went back into photoshop, cropped the image to the exact size of the button instances and reimported them to flash and updated the symbols. The exported movie now displayed a 550x400px blank window. I was able to get the mc re-centered by adjusting the x,y coordinates in the info pallet/properties, but when I try to resize the document to fit the new smaller size of the mc, it also scales down the actual size of the button proportionately. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. (I'm using Flash 8 and have access to CS3 if it makes a difference)
