Ever have one of the projects where if it's not one thing it's another?

Ok, now I am working on some animation. I had a small amount of text that starts out with the alpha at 0, over 20 frames the text grows 300% larger and fades in to opaque, then over the next 20 frames it grows another 300% and fades back out to alpha 0. It's a simple animation that I've done many times but I can't get this one to work.

For some reason, even though the text begins at alpha 0 (invisible), (and I have verified this repeatedly) it continues to show when I test the movie. Also, the fade out doesn't work. It grows fine but no fade in/out.

Incidentally, yes, the text is a symbol.

Any ideas?
