indent/embed/bevel effect

I am attempting to make a pc power button. I want to take a shape and embed it into the layer underneath. In Photoshop we used to call this a pillow affect or indented. The problem I have is the highlights and shawdows. Using a linear gradient puts white edges where there should be dark edges and vice versa.
The way I did this was to copy the shape onto a lower layer.
Then use a white to black gradient, white starting in upper left hand corner of shape (had to use gradient adjust).
then once the shape is filled with a gradient, I do modify/shape/soften fill edges to expand and feather the lower shape.
This gives me what I have linked to below....

Is there a quick and easy explanation of how to correct my highlight problems? thanks in advance!

I've also attached the .fla for my work thus far.
