Including Custom Class error

I suspect that the answer to this dilemna will be really easy but I'm somewhat new to Actionscripting and this problem has been stumping me for days now.

I'm having a problem USING a new Class that I created in Flash MX 2004. The problem is that when I try to #include the class file in my main movie, I keep getting:

**Error** C:\Project Data\Graphs\FLA\Ells.as: Line 1: Classes may only be defined in external ActionScript 2.0 class scripts.
class Ells {

Ells.as is the class file and the code checks syntax with no errors. In fact, I dumbed it down to just a class reference with 2 vars and no methods, but still the error.

I checked the Publish Settings and I've set to Flash Player 7 / Actionscript 2.0. I've also tried with all combinations of Publish Settings options, but no luck. I'm stumped.
