Your vote for SilverLight or Flash?
How many of you wish to stay with Flash? How many of you believe switching over to SilverLight is the better choice?

way too early to switch, as far as I see, flash owns near-100% of web surfers share, and I don't even know what is silver light. I've seen some articles in the news saying it will kick flash ass, but there were also articles on how much hydrogen-powered vehicles will rule the world after we will run out of oil 8)

Hydrogen powered...
![]() Nice. LOL! Flash has been out for a while and each new edition just keeps getting better and better by offering more. True, SilverLight sounds/seems impressive, but what can't you do in Flash? Everything is available at your fingertips. |

Too soon to tell, and I've got a lot of time invested in Flash. I have a feeling Flash isn't going anywhere for a very long time.

I am forced to go with silverlight for my job. I am really liking it so far. I use it with Microsoft Expression Blend. Flash is alot more simple which makes it better in some ways.. For example it is MUCH more simple to make a button with roll over effects in Flash.
I like them both for different reasons. I think I will be using flash for certain things and blend/silverlight for others. I think eventually I may completely start using only silverlight/blend though just because there is so much more you can do. |

I think there isn't really a clear cut line to say which can do more or less. It's pretty much like when you juxtapose an apple and orange. We shouldn't be zealots over a technology. Bear in mind like firefox vs ie, we should allow for open competition than monopoly.
The main thing we should be concerned is to be versatile and adapt when we need to. There's no harm in learning new things as long as you have some spare time.

as one can see,
Flash is the future. and it's doubtless! probably only the nearest future, since new software is being debeloped, but still so far it is integral and irreplacable. you have to combine all your efforts to be successful in business, but spend not that much time on that! Flash is the answer!

hard to say. I've been a php/flash actionscripter guy for the past several years so I would normally would say Flash, however this year I've had to work on a lot of Microsoft .NET web applications, and I've really come to like the Microsoft Development Tools, which surprised me as I've usually had an aversion to all things Microsoft.
The Visual Studio 2005 IDE is a really nice program to develop with and I've found I could code much faster than doing the same thing in PHP, mainly because of the debugging features in VS 2005 and now I'm missing some of the features whenever also I work with Flash actionscript (although I haven't tried Flex out yet). Windows hosting environments have becoming cheap this year so I've found about 75% of my projects this year, I've done with C# & .NET as opposed to PHP, as I can belt out custom web backend solutions quicker. I now can understand why American game developers have an easier time with the XBOX 360 because of the robust Microsoft tools, as opposed to the PS3 dev tools. I'd hate to see Flash & ActionScript fall as I've been working with it for a very long time and have a special fondness for it, but I am at the sametime excited about the new features of SilverLight. At best, I hope it'll make Adobe try harder and make better future versions. The only thing worrying, if your on the Adobe/Flash side, is that Microsoft can be very persuasive in making a company switch to their products, as they are often willing to invest or offer seed money to your company. A friend of mine got 2 million from Microsoft to help start his web streaming venture because they are using Microsoft web technologies. If let's say Youtube or some other major sites get similiar incentives, I doubt Adobe can do the same. |
