I have a mainMovie.swf which acts as the PlaceHolder for 3 other SWF movies. After the mainMovie.swf has finished loading I set three other movies to begin loading (movie1.swf, movie2.swf, movie3.swf) so as to minimise those annoying loading screens later on in the users experience.

What I end up with is 4 movies all existing at the same time and although there is only ever 1 playing (i.e. as one plays the others all recieve stop(); commands) all the movies slow down massively.

What is the solution to this problem?

for this very reason only everybody loads movies when they are required. You are unnecessarily loading all the movies, which eat up a lot memory and the result is slow animation. The solution is to load the movie whenever it needs to be loaded that way the user might have to wait for a second but the experience will be better.Because now in your case the user has to wait in the begining of the movie itself.
